Fingerprinting Children

• Fingers to be printed must be clean and dry. Wiping the individual’s fingers with an alcohol swab and then drying them should prevent perspiration from being a problem.
• Make sure children are calm. If children are tense, fingerprints often does not register correctly.
• Pull apart ink strip or open ink pad to access ink.
• Grasp the child’s right hand at the base of the thumb with your right hand. Cup your hand over the child’s fingers, tucking under those fingers not being printed. Guide the finger being printed with your left hand. Press designated finger straight down on the ink strip, then straight down on the designated area on ID Kit or ID Card. Repeat step for left hand.

About Fingerprints

Fingerprints are permanent and unique, are formed before birth and last throughout one’s life until decomposition after death. Barring accidental or intentional mutilation, the ridge arrangement is permanent.

Fingerprint evidence is the most positive investigative means of identifying people. Even DNA blood analysis cannot differentiate between identical twins – only fingerprints can. Every fingerprint is unique. Fingerprints are records of the raised surface of papillary skin, also called friction skin, appearing on the palmar side of a person’s fingers.

Methods of Fingerprinting

• Rolled impressions. Rolled impressions are made by rolling the finger or thumb from nail edge to nail edge. They are made to show the entire friction surface of the finger or thumb, from the tip to one quarter inch below the first joint.
• Plain impressions. Plain impressions are made by simply pressing the four fingers on it at a slight angle. They should be showing the tips to one-quarter inch below the first joint. The purpose of plain impressions is to verify the order of the rolled impressions and to show certain characteristics that are sometimes distorted in the rolled prints.

Fingerprinting Tips

Taking good, clean fingerprints is not difficult. To be classified, a good fingerprint impression should be dark gray in color and free of smudges. All that is required to obtain good prints is practice. To help you obtain the best set of fingerprints possible, use the following procedures:

Preparations

Have the subject wash his or her hands to remove any dirt particles. Ensure that the fingers are free of lint from towels used to dry the hands. Make sure children are calm. If children are tense, the thumbprint often does not register correctly.

Inking

There are various inking methods. The ink and glass method, the porelon pad, and the inkless system are the most common. We use a disposable ink strip. All that is required is to pull apart ink strip or open ink pad to access ink. The mechanics of rolling fingerprints is the same for all methods.

Self-Laminating (Without a Machine)

Use the following items: an id card cut out and folded, a standard lamination pouch(sleeve) for 3.5" x 2" business cards, an iron and a cotton tee shirt.

• Turn on and set the iron to cotton blends and let it warm up.
• Place one completed card squarely inside one of the laminating sleeves.
• Place the plastic sleeve with the card inside, between the front and back of the cotton tee shirt. Firmly and evenly, press the hot iron on the tee shirt over the entire area of the plastic sleeve for about 30 seconds.
• DO NOT remove the card immediately because it will be hot. Let the card cool inside the tee-shirt for about a minute before removing.
